Red Grape Vines

Our Story

Having spent twenty years as a Marine Corps aviator, followed by executive positions with the owners of one of the world’s largest destination resort/casinos, my wife Teri and I decided that it was time to retire and catch our breath. The retirement part of our plan did not materialize, however.  We changed course, and in 2006 purchased the two-hundred-acre Reality Farm located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Northern Virginia.  The farm has been in existence since approximately 1753.  Adhering to the boat buyer’s superstition, we decided not to change the name of the farm since the farm had become our new "reality."

Teri went to work raising Jersey milk cows, Nubian dairy goats and Angus cattle herds.  I looked into the possibility of starting a small vineyard and farm winery within the boundaries of the larger farm.  I consulted with some of the top viticulturists, winemakers, and winery experts in the region, all of whom interrogated me at length to ensure that I really wanted to undertake such an enterprise.  Our first three acres of vinifera grapes were planted in 2007, and each year we added another acre of grapes to the vineyard for a total of 10 acres under vine.  Our vines are planted in the most ideal terrain in terms of orientation to the sun, ventilation, drainage, and soil.  Our focus has been and will continue to be on grape quality, with the objective of producing small batches of exceptional wine.

Our current grape varieties include Chardonnay, Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Franc,

Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Petit Manseng.

Why Quièvrement and not Guevremont?

guevremont family picture

Quièvremont is the original French spelling of the family name.

There is a small community in Normandy, France, on the Rouen-Dieppe road, called Quévremont.  It is in this part of France, that John’s family originates.  In the early 1700’s from the nearby port of Dieppe, the first Quièvremont (Jean) embarked as a soldier in the French navy for New France (Quebec).  Starting in the 18th century, Quièvremont and Guèvremont was used interchangeably by notaries and priests recording the baptisms and marriages of the family. By the 19th century, the family name Guevremont is widely encountered; the “Q” and the accent gone.

Quièvremont means “goat mountain;” the Norman word quièvre corresponds to the French word “goat” and the suffix “mont” indicates an elevation or hill.
